Time Lapse Imagery: Capturing Time in the

Camera

Show #200

Talking about Time-lapse photography: a technique in which the frequency at which frames are captured is much lower than the frequency used to view the sequence. When played at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing. Processes that would normally appear subtle and slow to the human eye, such as the motion of the sun and stars in the sky or the growth of a plant, become very pronounced. Over the years Shiv has earned numerous awards and recognition both nationally and internationally. Shiv devotes a great deal of his time to reviewing photography related products. He also conducts photo tours and workshops worldwide.

Drawn to Water: The Art and Natural Science of the Finger Lakes

Show #199

Talking about the ways natural science illustration involves attentive observation and careful study of the natural world. Through this visual language, artists help make research more accessible to wider audiences, expand our awareness of and appreciation for the natural world, and hopefully encourage us to support sustainability initiatives. It’s all about taking the time to look and appreciate the wonders that surround us. In this show we will explore the diverse interpretations of Finger Lakes artists, their mediums of expression, and how their observations lead to new discoveries and a deeper appreciation for the natural environment.

Guests

Elizabeth Morales, President, The Finger Lakes Chapter of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators; Lucille Frances Gagliardo, Illustrator; Stephen Dicerbo, Illustrator; Francis Fawcett, Illustrator

Fire Ecology: Green Shoots and Silver Linings in the Ashes

Show #198

Talking about her upcoming new book “The Cold Canyon Fire Journals”.
Robin Lee Carlson is an author and natural science illustrator with a particular interest in how landscapes and ecological communities change over time. Her work is based on observing and documenting the world around her as it unfolds. How are we moved by the places we find ourselves in? When we experience a place, how do we change it? How does it change us?
Robin’s artistic and scientific journey that ultimately leads us to a new understanding of how we must live in relationship to the land. The ways fire suppression and climate change undermine the regenerative work of wildfire and her story of how cultivating intimacy with our natural world teaches us what we need to do to sustain it.

Imaging Science: Inside the Magic of Ultrasound Art

Show #197

Talking about a new exhibition of Ultrasound Images that art students from Herron and Biomedical Engineering Students from the Engineering and Technology School created over the course of a few weeks last fall. In small groups of 6-8 students, Herron and BME students came together to learn how to operate an Ultrasound Imaging System at the Department of Radiology at the IU School of Medicine. It was a great collaboration and learning experience for students, especially since STEM and art students rarely come together.

Dr. Bray carries out research to solve big, real-world problems using technology. It’s not just big problems that Bray is interested in solving; it’s the near-impossible ones. “You tell me it’s never been done before, you tell me it’s impossible and I’m like, ‘okay, that’s what I want!’’ Like preventing pandemics? As Principal at LeadDoAdapt Ventures, Dr. Bray’s passions include shaping the Future of Data, Bio, and Space and providing strategic direction, advice, and leadership to organizations confronting turbulent environments. He accepted a role of Co-Chair for 2016-2017 with an IEEE Committee focused on Artificial Intelligence, automated systems, and innovative policies globally and has been serving as a Visiting Executive In-Residence at Harvard University since 2015 and as a Faculty Member giving talks on Impact and Disruption at Singularity University since 2017.
