Location:

Indian Lands Conservation Area, South Dennis

Description:

The Un-Nature Hike invites participants to embark on a unique exploration of the environment from a fresh perspective. Rather than focusing solely on the beauty and serenity of nature, this hike encourages participants to seek out the remnants and influences of human activity within natural spaces. As we hike, we will be tasked with spotting various “unnatural” elements that disrupt the harmony of the landscape. These may include litter, man-made structures, invasive plant species, or even sounds of civilization, such as distant traffic or construction. Along the way, participants will document their findings with photographs or notes, contributing to a collective art piece or report at the conclusion of the hike. Whether through observation, reflection, or action, this hike is an opportunity to see nature not just as a backdrop, but as a living system impacted by human choices.

daVinci Art Science Roundtable –

da Vinci’s Arte/Scienza: Bridging Art and Science

daVinci Art Science Roundtable

The daVinci art science roundtables are a facilitated monthly series of exploratory discussions for artists and scientists to talk about the culture of their two fields and how they might collaborate more meaningfully. Ultimately, the discussions also explore how collaborations intersect with public understanding of science. The roundtables began with the basic assumptions that discussion between the artists and scientists had the potential to create new knowledge and ideas that would be of interest to the participants and eventually to the public as well.

We invite you to an enlightening roundtable discussion that examines the profound relationship between art and science as exemplified by the works and thoughts of Leonardo da Vinci. Known as the archetype of the Renaissance polymath, da Vinci seamlessly integrated these two domains, believing that both were essential for a complete understanding of the world.

In this session, we will explore da Vinci’s dual pursuits in creative expression and scientific inquiry. The discussion will focus on key works, such as his anatomical drawings and paintings, illustrating how his artistic skills informed his scientific observations and vice versa. Insights will be drawn from articles and excerpts of his notebooks, revealing his belief in the interconnectedness of knowledge.

Attendees will engage in conversations about how da Vinci’s holistic approach encourages innovation in contemporary practices, highlighting examples where the boundaries between art and science continue to blur. The panel will encourage audience participation, inviting insights on how fostering collaboration between these fields can lead to new discoveries and perspectives.

Join us as we celebrate Leonardo da Vinci’s legacy of Arte/Scienza and discover how his visionary integration of art and science inspires us to embrace interdisciplinary approaches in our modern world.

daVinci Art Science Roundtable

The daVinci art science roundtables are a facilitated monthly series of exploratory discussions for artists and scientists to talk about the culture of their two fields and how they might collaborate more meaningfully. Ultimately, the discussions also explore how collaborations intersect with public understanding of science. The roundtables began with the basic assumptions that discussion between the artists and scientists had the potential to create new knowledge and ideas that would be of interest to the participants and eventually to the public as well.

Join us for an intriguing roundtable discussion centered on Leonardo da Vinci’s innovative technique of sfumato, a method renowned for its subtle gradations of tone and color that create soft transitions and a sense of depth in painting. This session will explore how sfumato reflects da Vinci’s broader approach to art and science, emphasizing complexity, nuance, and the interplay between light and shadow.

We will examine the technical aspects of sfumato and its application in masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa and Virgin of the Rocks. The discussion will highlight how this technique allowed da Vinci to evoke mood and emotion while capturing the intricacies of human expression and the natural environment.

Moreover, the roundtable will delve into the philosophical implications of sfumato, considering how its embrace of ambiguity and complexity mirrors the uncertainties found in scientific inquiry. Participants will discuss how conditions of ambiguity can foster creativity and innovation across both artistic and scientific fields.

Attendees will be encouraged to engage with one another and share their insights on how the principles of sfumato can inform contemporary practices in art and science, emphasizing the value of blending perspectives to enhance understanding.

Join us as we celebrate Leonardo da Vinci’s mastery of sfumato and explore the profound connections between art and science, inviting deeper reflection on the beauty of ambiguity and the richness of human perception.
